Measuring Personal Training Results – Testing the One Rep Max

By Physiqology

Eccentric Tempos in One Rep Max Testing

The eccentric tempo – the first number – is the speed of the lowering phase. Eccentric tempo must not change during the course of a one repetition maximum test. If you arrive at a weight that you cannot lower for the appropriate tempo, you have reached technical failure, and should conclude the test.

Equipment for One Rep Max Testing

The right tools make any job easier, and this applies to training aids for one rep max testing as well. Whether you intend to test regularly, 1-2 times per year, or just want to make your everyday training more effective, you should consider purchasing platemates and record plates.

Platemates are magnetized weights that attach to the sides of a dumbbell IF it has metal endplates. Platemates are a very useful tool, and we use them for every workout at Physiqology, because they allow you to lift a personal best every workout. It is boring to lift the same weight over and over again; platemates make training more effective as well as more entertaining.

Record plates serve the same function, but attach to the ends of an Olympic bar. Both pieces of equipment allow you to get closer to your truest one rep max, and are also great everyday-training aids to improve your rate of progress.
