Five Foods For Flawless Skin

By Bindu Nambiar, NYC Personal Trainer / Strength Coach

Physiqology- Foods for flawless skin

Your skin is the largest organ in the human body. The quality of your skin is indicative of the quality of your health. In Eastern medicine, the pallor, or color, of your skin helps determine your overall health and vitality.

There are many factors that contribute to the deterioration of the skin, such as aging, lack of sleep, stress, and environmental conditions. But good nutrition is the key component for flawless, glowing skin. You are what you eat, and it shows! My top five food picks for fabulous skin:

Salmon – A Healthy Fat Source for Your Skin

  • Great source of omega-3 fatty acids. Healthy fats are anti-inflammatory, and promote healing of the skin. Effective for rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis.
  • Contains polyunsaturated fats, which replenish fats lost in the skin. Prevents dryness and flakiness.
  • Contains astaxanthin, an anti-oxidant also found in krill, which protects the body’s tissues from oxidative damage.
  • Great source of protein, and easy to cook.

Blueberries – Great Source of Skin-Saving Antioxidants

  • Loaded with anti-oxidants. Thin-skinned fruits produce higher amounts of antioxidants to protect themselves from sun exposure.
  • Excellent source of vitamin C and E.
  • Neutralizes damages caused by free radicals.

Avocados – A Topical and Internal Skin Rejuvenator

  • Contains vitamins A, B, D, and E, which are all extremely beneficial for the skin.
  • Great as a topical moisturizer for skin or hair.
  • Remedies eczema and aging skin.

Sweet Potatoes – Another Vitamin-Rich Skin-Saver

  • Contain beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A in your body.
  • Rich in vitamin C.
  • A baked sweet potato a day keeps the skin doctor away.

Olive Oil – Inside the Body and Out

  • Contains antioxidants, vitamin A, and E.
  • Contains polyphenols, which reduce free radicals and promote cellular repair.
  • Great moisturizer to use topically.
